The roots of New Year's Day's celebration can be traced back as far as the seventh century when pagans were celebrating Jesus' Annunciation. However, some religious leaders did not like the tradition of celebrating the New Year on the same day as the day of birth of Jesus. The custom of exchanging gifts on this day first came into existence in the 7th century of Flanders and the Netherlands. The belief is that celebrations of the new years were inspired by the Gregorian year. Julius Caesar also named this month Janus which was the Roman god for beginnings. The god could see into the future and past from both his faces. Today, New Year's Day in many countries is celebrated on January 1. Based on the Gregorian calendar, the 1st day of the year is referred to as January 1. The year starts with a different date for other calendars such as the Julian. Others celebrate with dinners, parties and meals for the community. There are those who set off fireworks as a means to mark the beginning of the year.
